Quality early education & family support in San Francisco since 1970
South of Market Child Care, Inc. (SOMACC) is a San Francisco non-profit agency that provides quality early childhood development and family support services to children, families and the South of Market (SOMA) community. Founded in 1970, we offer early care and education programs at our Yerba Buena Gardens Child Development Center (YBG CDC) and Judith Baker Child Development Center (JB CDC), and free comprehensive family support services at our South of Market Family Resource Center (FRC). At our two child development centers and the FRC, we serve more than 1,000 children, youth and adults each year.
We are a privately run organization, funded primarily by the State of California and the City and County of San Francisco. Additional grants and donations from other government and private sources enable us to provide music, art, and other vital enrichment activities for the children; extensive professional development for the teachers and staff; and scholarship assistance to those who are in need.
In 2009, SOMACC received a Mayor's Certificate of Honor for service to the SOMA community. The Mimi and Peter Haas Fund has named the YBG CDC in 2005 and JB CDC in 2014 as Model Child Development Centers, two of only seven so designated in the City of San Francisco.
In addition, our child development centers have been certified Preschool for All (PFA) sites since 2006 for having achieved high standards of excellence in early education. As a provider of PFA, a citywide preschool program that offers free and reduced cost preschool for four-year-olds who reside in San Francisco County, we are expanding access to high quality early education, teaching and learning environments to all those children, regardless of income.
